Who can Intern at Health Services?

Pre-professional positions are available to UNH undergraduate and graduate students with appropriate experience, background and interest.

How long is an internship?

You can design a placement for an academic year or one semester. We usually do not offer internship opportunities during the summer.

Are work hours flexible?

Yes, in most cases, we can work around your academic schedule.

Can I receive academic credit?

Yes, this can be arranged through your academic program.

What majors have worked in your office?

Students who have taken advantage of learning opportunities in our office came from various academic programs: Social Work, Nutrition and Animal Sciences, Sociology, Psychology, Women’s Studies, Marketing, Nursing, Education/Counseling, Sociology, Health Management and Policy, Business Administration, Biochemistry, English and Family Studies.

How do I apply for an internship?

Please check back in March 2010.

Internship/Independent Study Program Objectives:

  • To support the academic mission of the university by providing students an opportunity to gain experience in their field of study by applying classroom knowledge in practical work experience.
  • To help students realize, develop, and apply their skills and knowledge preparing them for entry-level professional work.
  • To assist students in developing leadership skills.
  • To assist students in gaining a stronger understanding of themselves as a professional and as a person.
  • To increase students' knowledge of contemporary health and social issues.
  • To provide students an opportunity to observe and participate in the administrative functioning of a department and program.
  • To provide an opportunity for staff within the Office of Health Education and Promotion to supervise paraprofessionals
  • To provide the Office of Health Education and Promotion the opportunity to more effectively and efficiently provide programs and services to the University and local community.

  • Knowledge of health issues including: alcohol, tobacco & other drugs, sexual health, sexual orientation/gender issues, HIV/AIDS, nutrition/eating concerns/body image, emotional health, wellness, men’s & women’s health and financial management.

Supervision and Support:

Students receive weekly supervision with a member of the staff. This time provides opportunity for connection, feedback, questions, and discussion.

Performance reviews occur at mid- and end-semester.

 

Responsibilities of Student:

Prior to Placement:

  • Determine if a placement in Health Services is an appropriate placement.
  • Complete online application and interview process.
  • Prepare for the position by having the basic necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Be willing to be supervised by an internship supervisor, who will direct, guide, and evaluate the students and their performance during their placement.
  • Be willing to meet on a regular basis with supervisor.
  • Be able to fulfill responsibilities of placement.
  • Plan in advance and sign a learning contract with supervisor and other necessary parties outlining credit hours, roles, responsibilities and learning goals, objective and outcomes of placement. These goals and objective will assist supervisor in providing opportunities and guidance.

During the Placement:

  • Participate in on-going supervision.
  • Be evaluated mid-placement and at the completion of the placement by supervisor.
  • Complete goals and learning objectives as outlined in contract.
  • Complete any work required by academic department.
  • Evaluate your internship with the Office of Health Education and Promotion at the completion of placement.

 

Responsibility of Office of Health Education and Promotion:

During the Placement:

  • Provide orientation to Health Services and the Office of Health Education and Promotion and its role and responsibilities.
  • Provide on-going supervision.
  • Create environment that provides optimal learning experience.
  • Provide needed workspace.
  • Complete written evaluation on student's growth and learning at mid-placement and at the completion of placement.
