HIV Testing

If you are interested in getting tested for HIV, counseling and testing services are available to UNH students on Thursdays 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., during the Fall and Spring Semesters. The fee for this service is $20.

What to Expect

Because we are now offering rapid HIV testing using Oraquick Advance, getting testing for HIV has never been easier. Oraquick Advance is an oral collection device that is non-invasive and has a greater than 99% accuracy rate. HIV counseling and testing involves first meeting with the counselor, then having the oral specimen collected, then meeting again with the counselor to receive your test results. During the counseling session, you will be asked a series of questions to determine your risk for contracting HIV or other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The HIV testing process will also be explained. An oral fluid specimen is collected at this time by our lab personnel using Oraquick Advance, made by www.orasure.com. Twenty minutes later, your results are ready and available to you.

HIV Counseling and Testing is confidential, but not anonymous. The state of New Hampshire now collects data on all individuals who test HIV positive. Because of this, we are required by law to collect basic information about you during your HIV testing appointment.

If you need a serum (blood) HIV test for documentation purposes (Peace Corp, VISA, Insurance, etc.), we can also provide that for you. In these instances, the wait time for test results will be two weeks.

If you have specific questions about HIV testing, please call 862-3823. If you are interested in being tested for other Sexually Transmitted Infections (not including HIV), please call 862-2856 and make an appointment with your primary care provider.
