“I’m doing my part to end the AIDS Epidemic. What are you doing?” is a new health promotion campaign being utilized at UNH. The poster series features young men, all of whom have made good decisions about taking care of themselves and their partners. These men routinely practice safer sex. Some have also made the decision to abstain from sex all together. All are positive and healthy role models for other men and women. The campaign also challenges the reader to ask themselves how and what they are doing to protect themselves and their partners from HIV infection.
Men are involved in almost every case of HIV transmission, and have the power and responsibility to protect themselves and their partners. An HIV prevention campaign that focuses on men enlists men to take responsibility for themselves and their part in this epidemic.
Men’s sexual and reproductive health needs typically receive very little attention, and thus, boys and men learn to delay seeking medical treatment and care. In addition, many men learn that risk-taking is part of becoming a man in many cultures.
Positive change begins when we challenge these often dangerous and damaging ‘rights of passage’ for boys and men, and teach them to respect themselves and their partners. Providing positive male role models to other men and women about condom use, self-care, and mutual respect provides important and healthy messages for all.
We invite you to view each poster, each man, and see something important and wonderful in each of their faces and what they have to say about HIV prevention. For men, we encourage you to follow their lead – protect yourself, protect your partners, and take pride in being a healthy man.
