Educational Programs

The Office of Health Education and Promotion provides a variety of educational programming (trainings, workshops, presentations) on various health and wellness topics to the UNH community.

We require at least two-weeks notice to present a program. You can schedule a program by calling (603) 862-3823 or completing an online request form.

 

About Our Programs

  • All of our programs are created and presented by Wellness Educator/Counselors, interns and trained SPIN participants
  • Each program is designed based on the needs of the audience
  • Programs include lecture, discussion, videos and/or experiential learning
  • Programs generally run for 1 – 1.5 hours
  • We present programs in residence halls, sorority/fraternity houses, classrooms, staff/student trainings, conferences, workshops and more!
  • Our programs and services are available to the University of New Hampshire community only.

Programs Available

We are available to provide educational programming on the following topics:


Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Programs

  • Women and Alcohol (and other drugs)
    Alcohol (and other drugs) can affect women differently than their male counterparts. This can make some situations more risky for women. Learn about the differences, and ways to reduce risk while still having fun. Lots of conversation and discussion in this very enlightening program.
  • What's That Drug?
    An interactive program designed to educate about different drugs, including non-prescription and prescription medications, illicit drugs and even supplements.
  • Cultural Perspective on Alcohol
    How is alcohol used in other countries? How is it involved in religion, rituals and rites? Does the U.S. have a bigger drinking problem because of the drinking age? These and other questions will be explored as we look at how alcohol is used around the world and on our campus.
  • Here's Looking at UNH
    Does UNH deserve its Princeton Review ranking of 11th top party school. UNH data and even student opinion says NO! Come air your thoughts as we take a look at the real UNH.
  • The Drinking Game
    A fun, interactive game that looks at alcohol and other drug facts, new research and thought provoking questions. It combines education and fun as teams compete for the top prize.
  • Helping a Friend
    Most of us will know someone with a drinking problem at some point in our lives. Research supports that it will often happen in college. What can you do to help? Tips, tricks and techniques to help a friend or loved one.
  • Up in Smoke
    What is the buzz about marijuana? Is it widely used? What are the advantages and risks to using marijuana and what does the current research say?
  • Where Do You Stand?
    This is a fun and interactive program that looks at where we all stand regarding alcohol and other drug issues, on campus and in life!
  • Becoming a Former Smoker
    Learn about what kind of smoker you are, techniques to quit, and different services offered through the UNH Health Services. Receive a quit kit and some information on meditation. Can be a helpful program for "social smokers" (those who only smoke when drinking or around others who smoke) and for friends and family members too.
  • Design Your Own Program

Nutrition and Body Image Programs

These programs are presented by the Nutrition Educator, Interns and students involved in the SPIN program.

  • Allergy Awareness: Educating Students with Food Allergies
    This program provides support and education of  food allergies and diseases associated with food allergies that are commonly found on a college campus. It will help those students eat more safely and securely in the dining halls. 
  • Body Image
    This program exposes the unrealistic ideals of beauty and encourages students to love their bodies inside and out.
  • Chocolate Program
    This program highlights the numerous benefits of chocolate!
  • Diet Fads
    This program explores the current fad diets and why they may be hazardous to your health.
  • Folic Acid
    This program highlights the importance of folic acid and why this is an important nutrient for college women.
  • Freshmen Starting off Right
    Includes tips on navigating the dining hall, building a well-balanced food plan and highlighting sources of common nutrients that most college students don’t get enough of.
  • Navigating the Grocery Store
    Grocery shopping is easier with this program offering general guidance and valuable tips to discovering  how to navigate the grocery store.
  • Sports Nutrition
    This program is aimed to dispel common nutrition myths and provide the real story to athletes and active individuals.
  • Supplements
    This program promotes food over supplements, but also includes education on when supplements may be necessary.
  • The Facts on Fats
    This program explains different fats and provides guidance on those fats students should eat in moderation and those fats that are beneficial to consume in higher quantities.

Sexuality, Sexual Health, and Gender Identity Programs

  • Contraceptive Choices
    Students will learn, through a hands-on program, about all available methods of contraception.
  • Women's Sexual Health
    Students will learn the basics of what to expect in an annual exam, including having a pap smear and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) testing, and doing a breast self-exam.
  • Men's Sexual Health
    Students will learn about the importance of being seen for regular exams, including STI testing and Testicular self-exam.
  • Safer Sex
    This interactive program gives students opportunities to learning about sexual safety, HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) prevention, sexual decision-making, and sexual self-care.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
    This program is about the basics of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
  • Divine Sexuality
    Students will learn about what they think, believe, feel, and have been taught about sex and sexuality through completing their own sexuality lifeline.
  • Gender Identity (Transgender Issues)
    Video presentations utilizing "Transamazon: A Gender Queer Journey" will initiate a program exploring gender identity and expression.
  • Men's Issues
    This program will explore what it means to be a man in American culture, including issues of friendship, fathers, sexuality, homophobia, relationships, communication, and more.
  • Relationships
    This program will help students explore the kinds of relationships (friendships, dating, intimate partners, etc) that they want to develop and nourish in their lives.

Wellness Programs

  • Self Massage
    This program is an interactive experience. Students learn how to do self massage on their heads, hands and feet. They are introduced to various techniques that enhance the massage and also learn the benefits of it. Please have students bring a pillow for a more comfortable experience.
  • Creative Ways to Manage Stress
    Participants share their stressors and current coping mechanisms then measure their current stress levels using bio feed back. Information on increasing awareness, how we can take charge of our responses to stress stimuli, making healthy choices in responses and how to incorporate these changes into daily living are discussed. Then, using the creative arts, like coloring therapy and mandala making, students are taught practical stress management techniques.
  • Financial Management
    Many college students have minimal skills in managing their money and debt. The CASH (Create a Savings Habit) program gives an excellent overview of budgeting, saving, credit card debt and money management.
  • Relax Your Way To Better Health Through Movement and Meditation
    Using basic movement and meditation, students can learn to relax and revitalize. This introductory program will teach students several approaches to meditation, ultimately helping them to let go of tension, and generate new energy. Students will be provided with additional resources and ways in which to incorporate these skills into everyday life. Please have students come dressed comfortably, with loose fitting clothes.
  • Balancing Your Life – What Are Your Greatest Strengths
    Using a strength-based problem solving approach, students will have an opportunity to explore their personal strengths and challenges through the creative arts. Images and discussion will help students to identify these concepts, as well as ways in which to balance their lives using their unique skills and talents. Informational handouts will be provided as a way to guide students to make decisions that are the healthiest for them.
  • Exploring Your Faith and Spirituality Through Expressive Arts
    What is your philosophy of life? What standards and ethics do you live by and how did you come to live by them? What does faith and spirituality mean to you? Self knowledge and understanding around these concepts contributes to wellness and balance in our lives. Through imagery, meditation and discussion students will have the opportunity to explore their personal faith. This program helps students examine the standards in which they live by, as well as learn about, and develop acceptance for others.
  • Self-Esteem/Self-Image
    How we feel and view ourselves is at the core of wellness and balancing our lives. This program helps students examine how they see themselves, what affects their feelings, and how they can enhance their self-esteem. It also touches upon assertiveness and decision making.

Design Your Own Program

Our staff is always looking to run new programs! If you have a program/topical idea in mind we can sit down with you to discuss your ideas and design a program that is tailored to your specific audience and goals. We suggest that you give us at least 2-3 weeks to make this happen. This timeframe includes time to meet with you individually.
