UNH Alcohol and Other Drug Education Program

The UNH Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Education Program provides individual assessments with a Wellness Educator/Counselor and education classes on risk reduction. Students are given individual feedback on their own risk level along with recommendations on how to lower their risk to increase safety. Follow-up counseling is available to students as appropriate.

I have been referred by the Judicial and Mediation Programs Office, court/police, resident hall staff for an alcohol or marijuana class, what should I do?

The first step is to call or visit our office to make an appointment with a Wellness Educator/Counselor. These appointments are approximately 50 minutes in length. The student is then referred to the step 2, which is participation in either the alcohol education or marijuana education class.

*Students referred by UNH attorney, or outside courts are required to bring in their paperwork prior to their first session

What should I know about the Alcohol Education Class?

Classes are held every other week for 2.5 hours.

The cost for the class materials is $5.00.

During the class students are taught about alcohol and the body, blood alcohol concentration, high risk drinking versus low risk drinking, and information on other drugs.

What happens after I take the Alcohol Education Class?

The final step will be to meet with the Wellness Educator/Counselor to discuss what you learned in the class and assess your own risk level.

Once you have completed the program (through step 3) a letter of completion will be sent to the referral sources. In some cases, it will be recommended to the referral source that a student continue with counseling. This information will be discussed with the student during the meeting after the class.

What should I know about the Marijuana Education Class?

Classes are held once a month for 1.5 hours.

There is no cost for class materials.

During the Marijuana class, students learn about the short and long term effects of marijuana use. The class provides students an opportunity to examine their own choices around the use of marijuana.
