Pneumococcal Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the follow receive the pneumococcal vaccine:
- All adults over the age of 65
- Adults, age 19-64, who have asthma or smoke cigarettes
- Persons age 2-64 who have one or more chronic health problems, including:
- - Chronic cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathies)
- - Chronic pulmonary disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary diease and emphysema
- - Diabetes Mellitus
- - Alcoholism
- - Chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis
- - Cerebrospinal fluid leaks
- - Functional or anatomic asplenia including sickle cell disease and splenetomy
- - Immunocompromising conditions including HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, generalized malignancy, chronic renal failure, nephritic syndrome; those recieving immunosuppressive chemotherapy (including corticosteroids); and those who have recieved an organ or bone marrow transplant.
