Pneumococcal Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the follow receive the pneumococcal vaccine:

  • All adults over the age of 65
  • Adults, age 19-64, who have asthma or smoke cigarettes
  • Persons age 2-64 who have one or more chronic health problems, including:
    • - Chronic cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathies)
    • - Chronic pulmonary disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary diease and emphysema
    • - Diabetes Mellitus
    • - Alcoholism
    • - Chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis
    • - Cerebrospinal fluid leaks
    • - Functional or anatomic asplenia including sickle cell disease and splenetomy
    • - Immunocompromising conditions including HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, generalized malignancy, chronic renal failure, nephritic syndrome; those recieving immunosuppressive chemotherapy (including corticosteroids); and those who have recieved an organ or bone marrow transplant.
