Health Services Response to Mumps Outbreak in Maine
November 30, 2007
Due to an outbreak of mumps in Maine, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has asked NH health officials to be on alert for possible mumps cases in the state. There have been seven confirmed cases of mumps in Maine; two of these cases are University of Maine college students. There are currently no identified cases in New Hampshire.
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that causes fever and swelling of the salivary glands.
Anyone who is not immune from either previous infection or vaccination can get mumps. Vaccination against mumps is the best way to prevent infection. Currently two doses of a mumps-containing vaccine are recommended.
To assist in minimizing the risk of an outbreak of mumps at UNH, the University has a requirement that all students have appropriate immunization for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) prior to coming to UNH.
