Research Opportunities

Canadian RiverSince 1987, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and its related international, apprentice, and other programs, has enabled over 1000 students to conduct research or work on creative projects in collaboration with faculty members. The program offers students the opportunity to design and implement a research project in any academic discipline both during the academic year and the summer. There are a number of types of awards, including Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships Abroad, and Research Presentation Grants. Recently, geography students have received awards to conduct research in the Murmansk region of Russia and in Barcelona, Spain. If you are thinking of going to graduate school, especially, this is a program to look into. For detailed information, including a description of the programs and application processes, a list of recent awards and fellowships, deadlines, and other summer opportunities, please visit the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research website.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), you can receive funds to pursue a research project here on campus, across town, or across the nation. Whether through taking a research-intensive course, working in one of the University's many centers or institutes, or teaming up with a favorite professor to pursue a mutual academic interest, the opportunities to become involved in research abound for students of all majors.

International Research Opportunities Program (IROP)

The International Research Opportunities Program (IROP) at UNH offers grants (averaging around $3,800 per student) for undergraduates to spend the summer after their junior year pursuing a research project in a foreign country. The deadline for sophomores to apply is typically in April each academic year. Students need to have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and must write a proposal detailing their research project and steps to be taken during the junior year to prepare for the trip. UNH IROP students have traveled as far away as Thailand, Tanzania, Hong Kong, England, Honduras, and many other countries around the globe. Interested sophomores should contact Georgeann Murphy, the coordinator of IROP, at 862-1933.

Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP)

REAP is an apprenticeship experience designed for highly motivated, first-year students. The REAP experience will provide a fast-track for talented students enabling them to explore topics of interest, to prepare for advanced work in their field, and to develop a close academic and professional relationship with a faculty member.
