Honors in the Geography Major
This program is one in which distinguished Geography majors complete an ambitious set of classes and projects. If you complete the requirements, you can graduate “With Honors” in Geography. You do not have to be enrolled in the University Honors Program to undertake Honors in the Geography major, although many students choose to complete both honors programs simultaneously. The Honors-in-Geography program provides students the opportunity to undertake exciting and original projects and work closely with one or more departmental faculty members. It can provide excellent training for graduate work.
Requirements
- Your in-major grade point average must be 3.2 or greater when you graduate.
- You complete any three (3) Geography courses designated as “Honors.” Typically you will complete an Honors Contract at the beginning of the semester for a regular (non-Honors) Geography course, and work closely with the instructor in developing an honors project in addition, or complementary, to the regular course requirements. (For more information about Honors Contracts, see: http://www.unh.edu/honors-program/designation.html.) A minimum grade of Bminus is required in any Honors course in the major.
- You enroll in Geography 795 (Special Project in Geography) for four (4) credits. This course will provide credit for work on your Honors thesis. It may also be counted towards fulfillment of the Geography major elective requirement and/or the writing intensive requirement within the major. The thesis is a 30-50 page project requiring substantial research or field work and is overseen by a thesis advisor chosen by the student. Your thesis topic must be approved no later than the end of classes in the semester prior to graduation by both the thesis advisor and department Honors liaison. Your completed Honors thesis will be submitted to the thesis advisor no later than the last day of classes of the graduation semester.
