Welcome to the Geography Department

The Department of Geography is a small, undergraduate-only department. We have five faculty members, plus a sixth professor whose main appointment is in the Department of Natural Resources. As a small department, we can provide our students a high degree of individual attention. Despite our size, we offer a wide range of courses that encompass the diversity of the discipline and provide students a solid foundation in geography.

Geography is a multifaceted and inherently interdisciplinary field. At one level, geography is the study of spatial variation in human and environmental characteristics around the world. Geography is also the study of places. Geography is an integrative discipline because to understand any place you must consider the complex range of forces that have shaped it. The Department of Geography at UNH is strongest in cultural, political, urban, historical, and environmental geography, climatology, and geotechniques. Faculty members have regional specialties in New England, North America, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Japan.

A degree in geography provides students a broad liberal arts education that enables graduates to pursue a wide range of employment and educational options. Most of our majors do not choose geography until they have already been at UNH for a year or two, so it is seldom too late to consider geography. If you desire more information, come see us — we’re always happy to discuss geography with students.
