The Formula SAE Series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small, formula style, autocross racing cars. A total of 120 teams from colleges and universities around the world registered for Formula SAE Michigan.
For competition, students are to assume that a manufacturing firm has engaged them to produce a prototype car for evaluation as a production item. The intended sales market is the nonprofessional weekend autocross racer. Therefore, the car must have very high performance with regard to acceleration, braking, and handling qualities. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable. In addition, the car's marketability is enhanced by other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts. The manufacturing firm is planning to produce four cars per day for a limited production run and the prototype vehicle should actually cost below $25,000.
Over the course of three days, the cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events including: technical inspection, cost, presentation, and engineering design, solo performance trials, and high performance track endurance. These events are scored to determine how well the car performs. The UNH Formula SAE Team designed, constructed and slaved over car #52 for roughly ten months; it paid off! The teams determination and hard-work was rewarded at Michigan when they placed within the top 25%. Car #52 competed fiercely at the endurance event, finishing all 20 laps with less than 2.5 gallons of fuel. If you would like to see the 2012 results from competition, please click here. Car #52 performed better than any previous car built here at UNH and this year's Formula SAE team hopes to continue this tradition.

In an effort to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity of this year's car we will be switching to a new engine. We are phasing out the 600cc Suzuki GSXR four cylinder engine and replacing it with a Yamaha YFZ450R single cylinder. This new engine features a dry sump oiling system, 11.6:1 compression, five titanium valve head, and an internal five speed transmission.
This picture shows the size comparison of the new engine (left) to the four cylinder (right) that has powered the last four years of UNH Precision Racing cars.
