French Major Katherine Steere Creates Her Own Story

Welcome to the French Program. Students who major or minor in French or French studies are expected to perfect their communications skills, to explore works of imaginative literature in French, and to learn about other dimensions of historical and contemporary civilization and culture in one or more French-speaking countries.

The program's emphasis on how to read critically and how to write and speak effectively is excellent preparation for graduate study and for many careers (such as business, international relations, law, foreign service, or teaching). Majors are required to spend one semester in a French-speaking country in a CIE approved program. Internships, and double or dual majors enhance the value of the course work done by majors and minors and are strongly encouraged.

Students may also graduate with honors in the major providing they complete the necessary courses and a senior thesis in French. Students will be expected to enroll in at least one French course each semester they are majors. Transfer students must complete a minimum of 12 credits on the Durham campus.
