Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Description: For immigrants or children of immigrants; provides opportunities for graduate study for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields.
Deadline: November
Value: $25,000/year plus up to $20,000 for tuition
Eligibility: Seniors and students already pursuing graduate study (if not past second year) but must not be over 31 years of age; a ‘new American’ has applied for naturalization, has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or is the child of two parents, at least one of whom is a naturalized citizen.

Department of State Critical Language Scholarships

Description: The CLS Program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction in critical languages: Arabic, Bangla, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Japanese, Persian and Russian.
Deadline: January
Value: All program costs are covered for participants. This includes travel between the student's US home city and program location, pre-departure orientation costs, applicable visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction
Eligibility: U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

Bridging Scholarship

Description: The American Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Approximately 100 scholarships awarded annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.
Deadline: April and November, annually
Value: $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students in any field; Japanese language study is not a prerequisite; U.S. citizens enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP)

Description: Funds graduate level study in the STEM fields; recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions
Deadline: November
Value: $32,000 for three years
Eligibility: Graduating senior or graduate student in first two years of PhD program in STEM fields; US citizen

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Defense Scholarship for Service Program

Description: Provides an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion.
Deadline: December
Value: Full tuition and education related fees (does not include items such as meal plans, housing, or parking); Cash award paid at a rate of $25,000 - $41,000 depending on prior educational experience; Paid summer internship
Eligibility: U.S. citizenship; 18 years of age or older; able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories; willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD; a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application) and, pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the About SMART page

Truman Scholarships

Description: Recognizes students who have the potential and initiative to be “agents of change.” Provides funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.

Value: Provides up to $30,000 in funding
Eligibility: Juniors; pursuing degrees in public service; record of service and leadership.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEC)

Description: The fellowships are for graduating seniors or students in their first two years of a PhD program in the fields listed above.

Value: Full tuition; Academic fees; Health insurance; Annual stipend of over $30,000
Eligibility: U.S. citizenship; Must be at or near the start of graduate studies in science and/or engineering programs; must be in one of following fields: aeronautical and astronautical engineering, bioscience, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences, computer and computational sciences, electrical engineering, geosciences, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography, and physics

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Program) University Summer Course Grant

Description: For summer study of language and culture in Germany

Value: €850, which covers tuition, room and board in whole or in part. Accommodations are arranged by the host institution. International travel subsidy of €300-450.

Goldwater Scholarships

Description: The purpose is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Recognizes STEM students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue PhD level education and research careers.

Eligibility: U.S. citizenships; STEM majors; sophomores and juniors; academic excellence

Environmental Protection Agency, Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Undergraduate Fellowships

Description: The GRO fellowship program helps build capacity in universities with limited funding for research by awarding undergraduate fellowships to students in environmental fields. The purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage promising students to obtain advanced degrees and pursue careers in environmental fields.
Deadline: December
Value: Up to $48,900 for two years
Eligibility: Sophomore; U.S. citizen, attend a fully accredited U.S. university, have at least a “B” overall average
