Komot GabrielKomot Gabriel, a dual International Business and Economics major, will participate in the UNH-managed Hungary study abroad program this fall at Corvinus University of Budapest. To support his study abroad, he received $4500 from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. About the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships: The Gilman Program aims to increase the number and diversity of students studying abroad, including students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand; students with diverse ethnic backgrounds; students from a diverse range of institutions; students engaged in non-traditional (for study abroad) fields of study, such as the sciences and engineering; and students with disabilities. Wenyue Jenny JingJing ('13) is the winner of two Golden Key International Honor Society awards: Outstanding Member and Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement. Students must be members of a local chapter of Golden Key to be eligible for these scholarships. She is also the recipient of a Alvan T. – Viola D. Alex FreidAlex Freid ('13) is the 2013 receipient of the Samuel Huntington Public Service Award, which provides $10,000 for a graduating senior to pursue one year of public service. Freid is putting the money toward the launch of the national non-profit PLAN: Post-Landfill Action Network, inspired by the successful Trash 2 Treasure program in place at UNH. Nicole ChartierNicole Chartier, a linguistics major from Concord, NH, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Colombia. Chartier has been placed as a language learning assistant at the District University of Bogotá (La Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas). Madelyn BallMadelyn Ball, a chemical engineering student from Potsdam, New York, has extensive research experience in the area of energy and biofuel production. She is a 2013 Goldwater Scholar who has worked in the Vasudevan lab, using genetic engineering techniques to improve lipase production; lipase is often used as an alternative to acid in biodiesel fuel research. Odin AchornOdin Achorn is a chemistry major from Newfields, NH, who does work on atom transfer radical polymerization and has experimented with synthesizing nanoparticles in the hopes of finding ways to fold polymers into more well-defined shapes. He is a 2013 Goldwater Scholar, and aspires to a PhD program in chemistry and a career conducting research in alternative energy and/or sustainable materials by studying reversible crosslinks in polymeric materials. Samantha-Jo VirgaSamantha-Jo Virga, a junior economics major from Wasaga Beach, Ontario, has received a Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) scholarship for language study in Germany this summer. The DAAD is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation; the DAAD offers a wide variety of scholarship opportunities for American and Canadian undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. About the DAAD University Summer Course scholarships: These scholarships offer funds to offset the cost of tuition, room and board; an international travel subsidy is also provided. Applicants must be pursuing full-time study at US colleges or universities. There are no restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must have attained at least sophomore standing at the time of application.
