Jordan Caley, Class of 2010. NSEP Boren Scholarship Winner

NSEP Winner

Jordan is a UNH sophomore from Stratham, NH. She is the recipient of the National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarship to study in Merida, Mexico during the 2008-2009 academic year.

While in high school, Ms. Caley traveled to Merida, Mexico, for a 10-day Spanish language immerisaon program, living with a host family there. A personal experience turned her interest toward immigration: When her Mexican host-brother came to the U.S. for a visit, he was detained for two hours upon arrival, emerging confused and scared. "After hearing my friend recount his experience, my initial reaction was anger and frustration. However, as my thoughts settled, I realized the predicament that we, as American citizens, are presented with every day regarding immigration...In order to protect our national secruity, we have no choice but to be overly cautious when it comes to immigration."

In Mexico, Caley plans to interview Mexican citizens to learn more about what factors influence peoples' decisions to cross the border and how relations between countries affects them. "One topic for research that is particularly interesting to me is the rates at which Mexicans immigrate to the U.S. depending on what region of the country they are from," says Caley. She will present her research in her international affiars senior seminar upon her return. Ultimately, she hopes to work for Homeland Secruity in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as an Adjudications Officer or Immigration Information Officer.
