Jon Fincke (class of 2011) is a Mechanical Engineering Major. During the past three summers he worked at the Woods Hole Group as a summer intern and then summer employee gaining experience in oceanographic deployments and ocean engineering. In the summer of 2009 he participated in the Sea Education Association program (SEA Semester) where he completed a research project on salinity minima in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre aboard their 135 foot tall ship.
In the summer of 2010 Jon was awarded a Student Summer Fellowship at The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) for the summer where he will be working in the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering (AOPE) department. He is working with Dr. Andone Lavery on broadband acoustic systems to measure zooplankton in the oceans.
This Summer Jon is also organizing a water sampling effort in Buzzards Bay between the United States Geological survey (USGS), WHOI, Woods Hole Group and the Coalition to Save Buzzards Bay. On campus Jon is a co-founder and active member of the student organization of CommUNHiversity, and a presidential scholar. Jon plans to attend grad school and focus on ocean engineering and physical oceanography after graduation.
