NSEP Boren Scholarship Winner

"National security for me is not just the physical protection of the nation, but also the insurance of our nation's political and economic health and prospertiy, domestically and internationally." says UNH junior Holly Eaton. She has been awarded a National Security Education Program (NSEP Boren Scholarship for fall 2008 study in Japan.

Concerning her upcoming semester in Japan: "My studies have shown me the importance of Japan to the United States' secruity and prosperity. Since their post-war build-up was completed, Japan has been a major partner for the United States. We benefit economically from our relationship with them and, until late, we have had their military support in the Persian Gulf. Good will ambassadors are necessary to maintain these close relations that are imperative to the United States' secruity and economic well being."

Ms. Eaton became interested in Asian culture while in high school and studied Chinese language at St. Paul's School the summer before her senior year. She is the daugher of a Russian linguist who worked for the Nationa Security Agency during his time in the Air Force. Ms. Eaton notes that, for her family the importance of national secruity was never a question.

During summer 2007, Eaton interned at the Foreign Services Insitute in Arlington, VA. "I sat in on mandatory overseas secruity seminars for Foreign Service agents and assisted in the organization of the overseas secruity seminar for Foreign Service children." During this time she, "came to the conclusion...that the federal government requires ordinary people to complete extraordinary tasks armed with common sense." Eaton's career goal is to become a National Secruity Agency intelligence or language analyst.
