Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Fellowships Office?
The Fellowships Office provides information, counsel, and support to students of high academic achievement applying for national and international fellowships and scholarships. Students need not be enrolled in the Honors Program and recent alumni are eligible for the services of the Fellowships Office.
We assist faculty members who serve as mentors and recommenders and as members of interview and screening committees.
As part of the Honors Program, we collaborate campus-wide with other offices and departments of the university in support of the Academic Plan to develop and realize the vision of an ideal college education.
Why should I apply for a Fellowship?
Recipients of fellowships and scholarships are given money to pursue their studies. Some provide funding for traveling overseas while others help pay for graduate or undergraduate school. There is also a considerable amount of prestige associated with winning, or even competing for, these awards.
Would I be a competitive applicant?
Students who apply for fellowships generally have a high GPA (over 3.5) and show promise of distinguished scholarly and creative achievement in one or more major fields of study.
A strong candidate is involved in community and civic affairs and has demonstrated leadership ability.
A strong candidate can write clear, concise, well-organized statements in response to inquiries concerning personal history and values, intended fields and courses of study, and on-going or proposed creative or scholarly projects.
A strong candidate can identify faculty members in his or her chosen field and related fields who can serve as mentors, provide strong letters of recommendation, and possibly serve on mock-interview committees.
Which fields of study have fellowships?
All. There are several fellowships that suit students in every field and every college at UNH. Many of the very prestigious fellowships are open to students in any area.
When should I begin to apply?
Generally, the sooner the better. Students can apply for many undergraduate fellowships as early as their sophomore year that help pay for their studies. Students interested in graduate level fellowships should begin to apply the fall of their junior year.
