CONTACTS: Stephen Pesci, UNH Campus Planning, or Sara Cleaves, UNH Office of Sustainability
In 2006, the UNH Durham Campus and the Durham Enterprise Rent-A-Car office signed a voluntary agreement to offer gas-electric hybrids in the Durham rental fleet. These vehicles are available for a $5 daily or $20/weekly surcharge over similar gas vehicles. The UNH Durham Enterprise Office currently has three hybrids: a Saturn Vue, a Ford Escape, and a Toyota Prius.
Choosing to rent a hybrid vehicle from Enterprise helps us reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. On top of that, if you plan on driving over 90 miles you will actually save UNH money on the rental! The gas-electric hybrids have high fuel efficiency, low emissions, don't need to be plugged in, and are fun to drive!
The entire UNH community is strongly encouraged to select these hybrid vehicles for their rental needs. Renters must be affiliated with UNH as a faculty, staff or student. Students must be over 21 and hold a valid license. There are some student exceptions for sponsored and in-state vehicle use that might permit UNH enrolled students who are 18-21 to rent; check with the Durham Enterprise Office at 862-3228.
This voluntary pilot project was developed as part of UNH's commitment to being a Climate Protection Campus and the on-going climate and energy initiatives of the UNH Energy Task Force, UNH Office of Sustainability, UNH Facilities, UNH Campus Planning, and UNH Transportation Services. As a key part of these initiatives, the UNH Clean Fleet program - called EcoCat - highlights the alternative fuel, fuel efficient, and low emission vehicles on the UNH campus. Previous EcoCat projects include the introduction of clean fuel compressed natural gas (CNG) , biodiesel, all-electric, and gas-electric hybrid vehicles into the UNH fleet. Learn more about UNH's EcoCat and Clean Fleet efforts!
We are grateful to our contracted rental provider, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, for their willingness to demonstrate our mutual commitment to climate protection by offering fuel efficient, low emission vehicles to the UNH community.

Questions & Answers About Hybrids in the Enterprise Durham Fleet
- What else are UNH and Enterprise working on to reduce fuel consumption and emissions?
Enterprise will voluntarily move towards selection of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified SmartWay™ vehicles as it renews the UNH rental pool fleet. SmartWay™ vehicles are designated by the EPA for high fuel efficiency and low emissions in their vehicle class.
- What are some other vehicle energy and emission initiatives at UNH?
UNH is dedicated to making energy efficient choices for our vehicles and transportation system that further our role as a leader in climate education and research. In the coming year, we’ll be developing UNH guidelines that will help the UNH community choose fleet vehicle replacements that are energy efficient, low emitters of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, and cost effective. By developing a Clean Fleet of right-sized vehicles, we will use our resources wisely and do our part to improve air quality and address climate change. Our goal is to exceed state and federal requirements and to demonstrate leadership.
