UNH Energy Waste Watch Challenge Fall 2006 Rules
The UNH Energy Waste Watch Challenge will engage residence halls and select apartment complexes on the UNH campus in a competition to reduce their building’s per capita energy and water consumption.
Rules In Brief
Students will compete as a residence hall or an apartment to reduce their per capita energy and water consumption compared to their building’s average use from the past three years and for their building's participation in an online survey. The three buildings that achieve the greatest reduction in use and highest level of survey participation will receive cash prizes deposited into their hall accounts. The overall winner will also receive the Challenge Trophy to be displayed in their building until the end of the next competition.
Rules in Detail
-
The competitions will take place between Oct. 25 and Nov. 22, 2006 (4 weeks). A second round will occur in the winter.
-
The residents of each building will compete to reduce their per capita energy and water consumption compared to their average energy and water consumption from the last three years.
-
UNH Office of Energy will track each building’s energy and water usage throughout the event and provide periodic updates.
-
Results will be reported in terms of percent change (Hint: You want a negative score). Each element (energy and water) will be scored separately. Each building will compete against its own past usage. In this way the building’s overall efficiency or inefficiency, which is affected by things that residents have no control over such as building structure or age, has been factored into this equation and will not give one building an advantage over another. Since the number of residents in each residence hall and apartment can vary from year to year, the final amounts of water and energy consumed will be calculated on a per capita basis.
-
Water will be measured in gallons.
-
Energy usage will be measured in BTUs (British thermal units) in order to provide a fair method to compare the buildings since they use a variety of energy types (e.g. steam, natural gas, and electricity).
-
-
The usage due to UNH offices located within residence halls will be subtracted from the total building usage prior to the per capita calculation.
-
-
Certain groups of buildings will compete as large single units:
-
The Gables
-
The Upper Quad (Randall, Hitchcock & Devine)
-
The Minidorms
-
-
Buildings will also be scored for their participation in an online survey.
-
Energy and water measurements for residence halls and apartments will be updated regularly on the Challenge website during the event so that students can track their progress.
-
Each residence hall and apartment will be equipped with one or more Energy Captains who have been trained to assist and encourage the students living there to reduce the most.
-
Students are expected to act fairly and with respect towards each other and toward those in other halls and apartments. Inappropriate behavior may result in a building being disqualified from competition.
-
The building with the highest score across all events will receive $300 dollars, which will be deposited in the buildings general fund to be used at their discretion. The second and third place team will receive $200 and $100 dollars, respectively.
-
The winning residents of the winning dorms are also granted the ancient honor of Bragging Rights and will receive the Challenge Cup to display in their building until the next round's winner has been announced.
-
All participants will receive complementary Peace of Mind for helping reduce our impact on the Earth and keeping UNH costs down.
-
The winner will be announced in early December, once all the utility meter readings have been compiled and analyzed following Thanksgiving Break.
