PEGMATITES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Richard R. Lessard

The locations of pegmatites, a coarse grained rock with interlocking crystals, are known throughout the State of New Hampshire, yet no single source document exists that records their locations. As part of a United States Geological Survey funded project to locate mineral deposits in New Hampshire, this portion of the project involved researching and gathering all known records of pegmatite locations, and portion of the project involved researching and gathering all known records of pegmatite locations, and using GIS/Arcview program, version 3.1, to digitize the data into a single electronic file. Additionally, field study was conducted to find several of the pegmatites, marking their locations using Global Positioning System, and determine the crystals size and mineralogy of each pegmatite. The final product is a statewide map of New Hampshire, denoting the locations of pegmatites, which will be incorporated into the next revision to the "Bedrock Geologic Map of New Hampshire".
