Research Opportunities

Elizabeth Joseph

In the spring of my sophomore year, I had a conversation with a friend where she patiently listened to my frustration over the impending, predictable summer of working at a restaurant in my hometown. During our talk, Julie suggested that I volunteer at a communal farm in West Virginia where she had lived previously—see a new place, do good work, experience a different way of life. I was immediately interested. A few phone calls later and I had plans to volunteer at Bethlehem Farm that summer. Looking back, I could never have predicted that this experience would inspire a grant–funded research project in creative writing and even post–college plans to build community through agriculture.

As a major research university, UNH provides all students with the unique and valuable opportunity to conduct research during their undergraduate years.

UNH's Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research provides the resources and financial support for the research, scholarly and creative projects of UNH students. Whether it's investigating moose habitat, examining the effects of the European monetary union, or composing music for a dance concert, each year students from all fields of study receive grants to embark on their own explorations.

Learn about the programs. Meet some of the students. Read about what other students have done. Then find out how to start a project of your own.

Through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), students may apply for Undergraduate Research Awards (URAs) and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs). The Hamel Center also administers the International Research Opportunities Program (IROP), Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP), INCO 590 & INCO 790, Study Abroad Research Grants, Honors Thesis Grants, and Research Presentation Grants.
