Students entering the University as first-year or transfer students may declare any of our majors as part of the Admissions process.
If you are a continuing student interested in declaring one of the majors in the English Department, you may do so during one week each term, usually the fourth week of the semester. Students must have sophomore standing or higher in order to declare a major in the English Department. The following majors are available: English, English Literature, English/Journalism, and English Teaching. You must either have taken or be enrolled in ENGL 419 (or ENGL 519) in order to declare English, English Literature, or English Teaching. The minimum grade is a "C." You must have completed ENGL 501 with a B or better in order to declare English/Journalism. Please bring a change of program form and your advising file to Hamilton Smith 113 during the designated declaration week. A mandatory meeting follows on the Tuesday of the fifth week of the semester. Call 862-1313 with any questions, or stop by Ham Smith 113.
If you wish to declare a Linguistics major, you may do so at any time during the semester by filling out a change of program form and meeting with the Linguistics Coordinator, Prof. Mary Clark.
