Chris Gallagher, Professor of English and Director of Writing Programs at Northeastern University, will speak at UNH on 9/21. The subject of Prof. Gallagher's talk will be "Back to the Future of Writing Assessment: The Curious Case of Electronic Portfolios".
Electronic portfolios are widely viewed as the future of writing assessment—perhaps our last best hope for providing an alternative to reductive standardized tests. At the same time, they are championed by efficiency-minded institutional administrators, accountability-minded education reformers, and of course profit-minded software vendors. This talk examines these competing agendas for eportfolios. IT ARGUES THAT if eportfolios are to serve teachers’ and students’ interests we will need—paradoxically--to revise our assessment theory and practices to account for the brave new world of networked writing, and to return to some simple ideas about writing and reading.
Chris Gallagher is the Director of Writing Programs at Northeastern University and author of Radical Departures: Composition and Progressive Pedagogy (National Council of Teachers of English) and Reclaiming Assessment (Heinemann).
This event is free and open to the public.
