Keynote Speakers

JULY 11

PENNY KITTLE is a high school English teacher in North Conway, NH where she is also a K-12 literacy coach. She is the author of: The Greatest Catch; Public Teaching; Inside Writing (with Donald Graves); Write Beside Them, which won the 2009 James Britton Award from the National Council of Teachers of English; and Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers. She is co-editor (with Tom Newkirk) of a new collection of Don Graves’ writing, Children Want to Write, that includes video footage from his original research on children’s writing. When she’s not reading, writing, or teaching, Penny is often hiking or snowshoeing in the White Mountains.

JULY 18

KATIE WOOD RAY leads workshops and summer institutes across the nation on issues related to the teaching of writing—and how reading can play a powerful role in the craft of writing. Her professional background includes both elementary and middle school teaching experience and two years as a staff developer at The Reading and Writing Project, Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition to publishing numerous articles and book chapters, she is the author of Wondrous Words, The Writing Workshop, and most recently, In Pictures and In Words.

TOM NEWKIRK is a Professor of English at the University of New Hampshire where he founded the New Hampshire Literacy Institutes and has been directing it for more than 30 years. He is author and editor of a number of books including The Performance of Self in Student Writing, which won the 2000 David Russell Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. In 2006, Misreading Masculinity was chosen by Instructor Magazine as one of the most significant books for teachers in the previous decade. He has published Holding On to Good Ideas in a Time of Bad Ones and most recently, The Art of Slow Reading.
