- Creating smart buildings that react to changing conditions (weather, earthquakes, energy crises and other natural/man-made concerns) to improve safety, reliability and sustainability.
- Conducting interdisciplinary research that integrates civil engineering (structural control and health monitoring), architecture (design and building energy modeling), and electrical engineering (control system and sensor network).
- Promoting interdisciplinary studies among undergraduates with a minor program in Architectural Studies that spans Civil Engineering (CEPS) and Arts and Arts History (COLA).
- Applying smart technologies to civil infrastructures to improve sustainability and resilience; and to study interactions between buildings and infrastructures (e.g., power grids, transportation systems).
