Faculty Learning Communities

To participate: faculty must commit to advancing their scholarship through the submission of a proposal for external funding or participate in an externally funded program to support the advancement of their scholarship and leadership
Model: Cohort based and team focused, primarily by application and nomination
Length of Programs: Primarily 1 – 2 semesters with continuation as needed
Special Support: 1-day guided visit to federal agency or foundation; proposal development support from office of research development and communications
Expected return on investment: 10 to 1 return on financial investment with overall program before end of year 2;
Expected Scholarship and Engagement: 100 journal publications, 200 national or international presentations, 40 strengthened external partnerships
Evaluation Component: a 3-year longitudinal study (2011 – 2014) to assess the impact of specific interventions and to measure and track outcomes
National Science Foundation Early CAREER Learning Community
- Colleges Involved: College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, and Whittemore School of Business and Economics
- Opportunity to increase the number of proposal submissions
- Focus: yearlong cohort model
- Number: 10 faculty who will apply for an NSF Early CAREER award; typically $500,000 over 5 years to advance the careers of assistant professors
- Components:
- Daylong visit to NSF in early fall
- Five 2-hour “lunch and learn workshops” over the fall and spring
- Attendance at 2-day workshop at UConn in early spring semester
- Proposal review by VanScoyoc & Associates
- Lead: Senior Faculty Fellow, Professor Eleanor Abrams, Science Education and Kathy Cataneo, Office of Research Development and Communications
Sustainable Ecosystems Learning Community
- College Involved: College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA)
- At request of COLSA Dean
- Focus: Support for new faculty
- Number of Faculty: 8 recently hired COLSA faculty: 7 assistant professors, 1 associate professor
- Components:
- 2-hour “lunch and learn workshops” 4 -6 times per year
- 3-day summer institute (August 2011)
- Guided visit to USDA and NSF
- Individualized and smaller team meetings with faculty fellow throughout the year
- Ongoing proposal planning and submissions among the team of 8
- Lead Faculty Fellow: Professor Serita Frey, Natural Resources & the Environment and Office of Senior Vice Provost, Engagement and Academic Outreach Faculty Fellow
- College Involved: College of Liberal Arts (COLA)
- At request of key Humanities faculty
- Key Collaborators: Center for the Humanities; Office of the Dean COLA
- Focus: faculty working on a range of proposals to NEH, ACLS, and selected foundations
- Number: 20 - 25 faculty annually
- Components:
- Hands-on support for proposal development with small teams (4-6) of humanities faculty
- Individualized proposal support for individual faculty submissions
- Proposal planning and review by HLC faculty fellow and Office of Research Development & Communications
- Mini travel grants (up to $500) for visits to NEH, libraries, or other funders to support scholarship and proposal preparation
- Lunch and Learn (2- 4 per year) to familiarize faculty with appropriate grant opportunities
- Faculty support for participation in the NEH program day at Dartmouth

Library Faculty & Staff Learning Community
- Units and Key Collaborators: Dean of the Library, Center for the Humanities
- Components:
- Lunch and Learn (2-4) 2-hour workshops to build knowledge about opportunities
- Close collaborations with small teams of faculty/staff to support proposal submission
- Planning and review of proposals by faculty fellow and research development and communications
- Mini grants available for travel to NEH, other libraries
- Number: 10 Library faculty and staff
- Focus: building opportunities among library faculty/staff and with other UNH faculty to pursue external funding

ADVANCing Your Career at UNH and Beyond
- Colleges and key collaborators: Joan and James Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science and Engineering Education; Deans in CEPS, COLSA, and EOS; Office of the VP for Faculty Development & Inclusive Excellence

- Specific goal setting to advance career success
- Interaction and learning from Deans and Department Chairs to clarify expectations for successful advancement to full professor
- Understanding budgeting and finances
- Building a scholarly team for career success
- Focus: Support for and Advancement of women in the STEM disciplines

- Six (4 – 6 hour) workshops
- A scholarly coach
- Interaction with successful scholars
- An opportunity to visit a federal agency or funding
- Seed Funds

Engaged Scholars Academy (www.unh.edu/engaged-scholars)
- Colleges Involved: All UNH and UNHM Colleges, EOS and UNHCE
- Numbers: 89 faculty and extension educator (2004 – 2011)
- Model: cohort and team based
- Focus: faculty and extension educators building mutually beneficial collaborations with external partners—regionally, nationally, internationally and who advance their scholarship
- Components:
- Five (4-6 hour workshops) over a semester
- Induction and graduation ceremony
- A project with an external partner
- Interaction with faculty experts and funding agencies (federal/foundation)
- Interaction with successful Academy and their community partners
- Partnerships: New local, national and international partnerships
- Publications about the Engaged Scholars Academy Model
- 1 Invited book in preparation with the Michigan State University Press series on transformational leadership and engaged scholarship
- A special edition (5 articles) about the University of New Hampshire’s Model of Engaged Scholarship invited by the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement--JHEOE (in preparation)
- 2 articles and 1 case study about the Academy in JHEOE, Planning in Higher Education, The Sustainable Learning Community (book)
