Safety Precautions for Finger and Heel Lancing

All personnel acquiring or collecting human specimens are required to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

1. Protective Clothing (e.g., Laboratory Coat or Gown)
2. Protective Eyeware (e.g., Safety Glasses or Goggles)
3. Protective Gloves (e.g., Nitrile or Latex Gloves)

Personnel collecting the sample must receive the following training*:

1. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training
2. UNH Biological Safety and Sharps Training

*The training listed above is not required for people who only draw, collect, analyze, dispose, etc. their own blood.

All equipment must be used according to the Manufacturer's Recommendations. All lancing devices must have an integrated safety feature to protect the user from accidental injury. An example would be a retracting finger or heel lancet.

All human blood, body fluids and tissues must be collected and disposed as biohazardous waste. Contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 862-4041 for more information.
