As part of EGO's mission to support and encourage one another while we pursue our academic careers, we are inviting graduate students in both literature and composition programs to volunteer to read their current academic works in progress, in a mini-conference setting.

Do you have an article that you're working towards publication? A seminar paper that you'd like to revise into a conference paper? Let Nicola Imbracsio know (nmj4@unh.edu) what you have and when you'd be willing to read. A Friday afternoon will be arranged in which you (and other graduate students) may present their work in front of an audience of supportive graduate students. This is a low-pressure event!

Hello new and returning grad students!

Please check out the Current Students page. There you can find short bios of students currently in our English graduate programs. This information is available so you can get to know everyone else. It's also a good way for you and prospective students to see the variety of directions each of us has taken in our grad school journeys at UNH.

It's the beginning of the year, so it's time to introduce new people and update everyone else. Please send a bio to mike.garcia@unh.edu by Monday, September 8. Updated bios from current students are needed by the same date (old ones will disappear).

Here are a few guidelines for your email:

Please write in the third person.

Please keep your bio somewhere between 100 and 200 words.

Mention your degree program at UNH as well as your specific interests.

List anything noteworthy about your academic career that you wish to share: your previous degrees; past awards, achievements, publications, presentations and so on; upcoming or in-progress thesis or dissertation projects; your teaching experience and any other work you do at the university.

Tell us a little bit about your interests outside of school, as well as any past experiences that have helped to define your current plans and interests.

Please attach a current photo to your email. It should be at least 200 x 200 pixels and should show your face clearly. If you don't have a photo, please mention this in your email and we'll arrange to have one taken.

To all English graduate students,

EGO is currently in the initial planning phase for a spring 2008 graduate conference in English to be held at UNH. A potential theme is below. At this point, we're open to any and all ideas, so please respond to this post by suggesting additions or changes... or feel free to suggest entirely different ideas.

Respond by clicking "Post a comment." If you don't have a Blogger account, you can post under your name by replying as "Other."

We would like the theme to be broad enough to appeal to a wide range of interests, and we also wish to include graduate students from Literature, Rhetoric/Composition, and Creative Writing programs. The theme should not be so broad, however, that it is meaningless. Tell us what you think!

GRADUATE CONFERENCE
"What Happens Next?: Reading, Writing and Living the Future of English Studies"

As higher education struggles to maintain a sense of purpose while coping with the rapid changes of the 21st century, the role of English Studies in particular is a frequently discussed topic. Recent years have seen a shift in the way the language is both used and studied, which threatens to widen the gap between English departments and the world on which they comment. Scholarly interests in literature and composition are increasingly testing established theoretical, canonical and historiographic boundaries. Ethical considerations have arisen as the concepts of plagiarism and "intellectual property" have become more prominent. And practical matters have a greater impact than ever: the influences of vocationalism and standardized testing continue to exert pressure on English instruction at the college level, even among the areas of study that have traditionally ignored or resisted such pressure. Perhaps most importantly, these changes are mediated by new technology, a development that might seem frightening to a discipline that often seems best equipped to operate among books and essays.

Yet new scholarship continues to keep English Studies relevant, and the work of graduate students often takes the lead in disciplinary innovation. As we look toward the future of the discipline, we should seek to strengthen the connections among these scholars. The proposed conference seeks contributions from graduate students who are seriously engaged in the valuable work of aligning their profession with the new realities of the century in which they live.

Announcement: Donald Murray Prize

THE DONALD MURRAY PRIZE

The Special Interest Group on Creative Nonfiction (a subsidiary group of the Conference on College Composition and Communication) solicits nominations for the DONALD MURRAY PRIZE. This prize will go to the author of the best essay/work of creative nonfiction on the subjects of teaching and/or writing published in the year.

The Donald Murray Prize is generously sponsored by Thomson/Wadsworth Publishing, who will provide an honorarium of $500.00 to the winner. The judges this year will be Lynn Bloom, Rebecca Faery, and Doug Hesse.

Authors, editors, and readers are asked to nominate essays/creative nonfiction on writing and/or teaching that were published between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006. Send four copies of each work to The Donald Murray Prize, University Writing Program, One Shields Avenue, UC Davis, Davis CA 95616. Also provide publication information, including the date of publication.

The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2007. The winner will be announced at the 2007 CCCC convention in New York.

Welcome to 2006-07! I've just been given access to the EGO site for the year, so I can start updating again. I hope to complete some of the sections that didn't get done last year. Stay tuned.

Jeff Covington has been accepted to Brown University's PhD program.

Cara Snider has been accepted to West Virginia University's PhD program.

Both Cara and Jeff are waiting to hear from other schools before making final decisions. Congratulations to both!

The GRE is Changing in 2006. Some highlights:

The new test will be administered as a computer-based, linear exam. The current GRE is a computer-adaptive test (CAT).
ETS will revise the content of each of the three sections of the test: Analytical Writing, Verbal, and Quantitative.
ETS will offer the GRE on fixed testing dates rather than ongoing test dates throughout the year. It plans to offer the test on 30 dates per year.
The GRE will be delivered via the Internet to testing centers, and everyone who takes the exam on a given day will receive the same questions.
The new exam will be about four hours long, a significant increase over the 2½ hour length of the current exam.
Scoring scales will change. AWA scores will retain the current 0-to-6 scale, but test takers will receive Quantitative and Verbal scores on a scale of about 120 to 170.
ETS intends to increase the number of test centers to ensure that there will be enough spaces for all test takers.
