Project Abstract:
In the summer of 2004, we spent 2 weeks gathering information regarding American Black Bears in the Samuel A. Tamposi Water Supply Reserve. The information collected included location of bear sign (marked trees, trails, etc.), and identification of major plant resources. In addition, we surveyed several land owners abutting the study area, to see if they had previous evidence of bears on their property. The data was collected in order make inferences about bear travels through the property, including the access of food resources both within and extending into private land. Major resource areas were identified and mapped, establishing a strong connection between plant resources and bear sign. Connections between plant resources and bear sign led outside of the property and correlated with private land where bear sightings had occured.
