INTERNSHIP - EDUC 900/901 (12 Credits total) is required for both the Elementary and Secondary Education Programs
The two-semester supervised school internship is required for licensure. It typically runs from September through May, six graduate credits each semester. The internship MUST begin in the fall semester and be completed in the spring semester.
PORTFOLIO/CONCLUDING EXPERIENCE
Master’s Program Portfolio and Colloquium
DEGREES (Minimum of 32 credits)
|
M.Ed. Internship: 12 credits. Additional credits: 20 Of the 20 additional credits at the graduate level, 10 must be in education and 10 can either be in education or in another department.
|
M.A.T. Internship: 12 credits. Additional credits: 20 Of the 20 additional credits at the graduate level, three courses (9-12 credits) must be in an area of subject matter concentration (NOT in education); the remaining 8-11 credits can be in education or another department. A graduate student in this program would be strongly encouraged to develop a subject area concentration consisting of at least three courses in consultation with his or her advisor.
|
Admission to the M.Ed. or M.A.T. is competitive and requires submission of an application to the UNH Graduate School. This includes official transcripts, scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and recommendations. Thirty-two (32) credits is the minimum for either degree.
REQUIRED METHODS COURSES FOR SECONDARY LICENSURE – We strongly recommend that required methods courses be taken before the internship.

Certification Only
Some students may complete a graduate program which results in recommendation for teacher licensure, but does not involve a master's degree. This licensure only program is available primarily to previously licensed or "experienced" teachers who are seeking an additional area of licensure by adding an endorsement to their existing certificate, or to individuals who already have an advanced degree.
Licensure only consists of the following:
(1) A positive recommendation from Department of Education faculty members after completion of EDUC 500; Live, Learn, and Teach; or the equivalent experience is required for admission into this program.
(2) An undergraduate major or its equivalent in the subject area in which licensure is sought is required for all candidates for secondary license areas. Some students may need additional courses in their subject area.
(3) Teacher education course work required for licensure (16-24+ credits).
(4) Internship (normally two semesters for 12 credits).
Students seeking admission to the licensure only program must file an application with the Department of Education. The application requires official transcripts from all previous college work, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and evidence of completion of Exploring Teaching, EDUC 500, or the equivalent. Students are encouraged to consult the Director of Field Experiences or the Director of Teacher Education at UNH Manchester as early as possible to discuss internship arrangements.
Those completing the licensure only program are required to fulfill a testing requirement for state licensure which includes the Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments (elementary and secondary), and Praxis II Subject Assessments (secondary only).

Special Education
Prospective teachers who are enrolled in a teacher education graduate program (elementary or secondary) may wish to gain an additional license in general special education. All regular education requirements for teacher licensure must be completed. In addition, the following course sequence must be successfully completed:
* EDUC 750/850, Introduction to Exceptionality*
* EDUC 751/851, Educating Exceptional Learners*
* EDUC 939, Assessment of Children with Learning Difficulties
* EDUC 940, Teaching Children with Learning Difficulties
* EDUC 900C & 901C Internship & Seminar-General Special Education
Secondary students must also complete a reading course (EDUC 806, 807, 907, or 910) and a mathematics methods course.
*Graduate students must take the 800 level.
The internship for students desiring this additional license is focused specifically on providing services in the regular education classroom. Additional responsibilities such as participation in evaluations, attendance at meetings, and the provision of support services in other regular education classrooms will also be expected. Since students enrolled in the M.Ed. are required to complete a 12-credit graduate concentration, students in the general special education licensure program could use these special education courses toward this concentration.
Once the program is completed, the students will be licensed in general special education and as a regular classroom teacher (elementary or secondary). The special education license will allow the teacher to serve students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, emotional disabilities and mental retardation who are included in regular education classrooms, as well as resource room settings.
Live, Learn and Teach Program
Many students pursuing post B.A./B.S. entry begin their program in the summer by participating in Live, Learn, and Teach (LLT). Taught by an experienced team under the direction of UNH faculty members, LLT is a challenging seven-week program designed for prospective teachers to learn how to design and implement activity-centered and community-based curricula. The program begins with a Wilderness Week in New Hampshire's White Mountains where participants engage in hiking, writing, rock climbing, and sharing daily tasks. The emphasis is on devising alternative problem solving methods that can be adapted to teaching. Participants return to Durham to plan and lead Summer Learning, a five-week, activity-centered, interdisciplinary summer program for children (grades 1 to 12) from Durham and the Seacoast area. Team meetings, individual conferences, and workshops are integral to this phase.
Students earn twelve credits from LLT, including the Exploring Teaching component of the teacher education program. The twelve credits are earned as follows:
EDUC 700/800A Educational Structure and Change 4 cr.
EDUC 703/803H Experiential Curriculum 4 cr.
EDUC 500 or EDUC 935B Exploring Teaching (500)/Seminar & Practicum in Teaching (935B) 4 cr.
TOTAL 12 cr.
EDUC 935 may be used by M.Ed. candidates toward the 12 credits required for the graduate concentration, in addition to fulfilling the Exploring Teaching requirement.
While LLT participants do not necessarily need to be admitted to UNH, many use it as an intensive beginning to a graduate program in teacher education.
