Special Education, Certification-Only Programs

Who should apply? students who already possess a master's degree in education or a related field


New Hampshire Department of Education Approved Certification Programs

Students who already possess a Master’s degree in Education or a related field may choose to complete the Alternative One Certification-Only option. Applicants who do not possess a Master’s degree or who are not concurrently enrolled in a Master’s degree program will not be considered for the Certification-Only options. Students may access these programs through the M.Ed. in Special Education

The following certification options are offered:

General Special Education

Learning Disabilities

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Special Education Administration

On receipt of a complete application, faculty will call to arrange for an interview. Applications for the Master’s degree and Certification-Only are accepted in the fall (November 1) and spring (February 1).

Application For Special Education Certification-Only Programs

 

General Special Education 

The Special Education Program provides an Alternative One program for endorsement and certification in general special education. Students must possess a Master’s degree in Education or a related field to be considered for admission to this option. All others must apply for admission to the Graduate School. EDUC 850: Introduction to Exceptionality (4 cr)

EDUC 851 A or B: Teaching Exceptional Learners (4 cr)

EDUC 856: Supporting Families of Individuals with Exceptionalities (4 cr)

EDUC 900/901C: Internship and Seminar in Special Education (6 cr/6 cr)

EDUC 939/940: Assessing and Teaching Students with Learning Difficulties (4 cr/4 cr)

Learning Disabilities 

The Special Education Program provides an Alternative One program for endorsement and certification in Learning Disabilities. This endorsement is built on our current program leading to certification in General Special Education.

On entry into the M. Ed. Program in Special Education, students may elect the option/endorsement in learning disabilities. Students who already have general special education certification on entry into the master’s degree program would focus on the specific endorsement population in their coursework. Students who already possess a Master’s degree and certification in General Special Education are eligible to apply to the Certification Only Program. Click here for certification only application.

Concentration in Learning Disabilities

Students must complete the following 20 credit concentration in learning disabilities and a supervised internship (EDUC 900/901C: 6 cr/6 cr).

EDUC 852: Contemporary Issues in Learning Disabilities (4 cr)

EDUC 856: Supporting Families of Individuals with Exceptionalities (4 cr)

EDUC 908: Diagnosis of Reading Disabilities (4cr)

EDUC 909: Remediation of Reading Disabilities (4 cr)

EDUC 910: Reading and Writing in the Middle/Secondary School (4 cr)

**Students may substitute the following courses for EDUC 910:

EDUC 803K: Writing Across the Curriculum (2 cr)

EDUC 807: Teaching Reading Through the Content Areas (2 cr)


Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities 

The Special Education Program provides an Alternative One program for endorsement and certification in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. This endorsement is built on our current program leading to certification in General Special Education.

On entry into the M. Ed. Program in Special Education, students may elect the option/endorsement in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Students who already have general special education certification on entry into the master’s degree program would focus on the specific endorsement population in their coursework. Students who already possess a Master’s degree and certification in General Special Education are eligible to apply to the Certification Only Program. Click here for certification only application.

Concentration in Inclusion Facilitation (IDD)

Students must complete the following 25 credit concentration in intellectual and developmental disabilities in addition to a supervised internship (EDUC 900/901C: 6 cr/6 cr).

Experience Severe Disabilities (2 cr)

Communication Supports (4 cr)

EDUC 954: Leadership and Systems Change in Inclusive Education (4 cr)

EDUC 956: Learning to Listen: Developing Positive Behavioral

Supports for Students with Challenging Behaviors (4 cr)

COMM 914: Seminar in Alternative and Augmentative

Communication (3 cr)


Special Education Administration 

The Special Education Program provides an Alternative One program for endorsement and certification in Special Education Administration. This endorsement is built on our current program leading to certification in General Special Education or Administration and Supervision.

On entry into the M. Ed. Program, students may elect the option/endorsement in special education administration. Students who already have general special education certification on entry into the master’s degree program would focus on the specific endorsement population in their coursework. Students who already possess a Master’s degree and certification in General Special Education are eligible to apply to the Certification Only Program. Click here for certification only application.
