How many hours a week will I be volunteering?

Seacoast Reads tutors travel to the schools twice a week for 45 minute sessions. We suggest that all volunteers set aside 4 hours a week to tutor. This includes travel time to and from the schools, plus a few minutes in case of traffic, delays, or unplanned events. The total commitment roughly is two hours, two days a week.

Below is an example of how the timing works:

Allen School meets every Monday and Wednesday from 11:00 - 1:00. This means we leave campus at 11:00 and will be back on campus by 1:00 (for those who have 1:10 class).

What if I don't have a car?

No Worries!

We carpool! Don't let a silly thing like not having your own car deter you from being a Seacoast Reads volunteer! Besides, there aren't any places to park a car on campus anyway:)

We'll get you there somehow!

Where do I get books and materials?

Books and materials are provided by Seacoast Reads!

Books can be found in Morrill Hall, room 5! Please feel free to stop by at any point during the day to take out books for your tutoring experience.

Don't forget to sign them out and to return them when finished!

How long does the program run?

The program begins each semester. At the beginning of both terms, Seacoast Reads recruits, trains, and places tutors in the schools. ( We also tutor in after-school programs.) Tutors are encouraged to stay at the same school throughout both semesters to see students' progress. For scheduling reasons, we don't expect everyone will be able stay at the same site all year, and some tutors like to change schools to get a greater variety of experience. We support either preference.

It is not required, either for anyone to do it for the whole year, but we would love to have you involved for both semesters!

Who can volunteer?

Any person is eligible to volunteer as long as an application, background checks, and school fingerprints are completed. This is something that the school districts and the state of New Hampshire require. We require that all new volunteers attend the Seacoast Reads training sessions offered through the Education Department.

Where will I be placed?

Once you have decided that you want to become a Seacoast Reads volunteer, we ask that you fill out an application. On the application, we have a list of all the times and days that Seacoast Reads visits the schools. The times and days follow the same schedule by visiting the schools at the same time twice a week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday).

The program does follow the UNH academic calendar. Whenever there are no classes, there will be no tutoring.

On the application, check off the time/day combination that fits best into your schedule. If you have more than one, please number them by preference. We do our best to accommodate first choices. If you do not have a preference, please let us know.

If you have any more questions, please contact me. Applications are available here. Please feel free to print yourself out a copy and return it to the Seacoast Reads office in Morrill Hall, room 5.
