Wilderness Week
Overview
LOGISTICS FOR DEPARTURE: Back of A Lot at UNH
We will be traveling to Franconia Notch in vans and staff vehicles. If you need to drive yourself to our UNH departure point, you can park your vehicle in the A lot parking area during Wilderness Week. You must have a valid UNH parking pass if you leave your car in A lot for the week. If you must drive yourself to Franconia Notch, please let Liza Finkel know as soon as possible.
WHERE WILL WE BE?
We will be staying in the Franconia Notch region of New Hampshire, in a rustic cabin (no indoor plumbing or electricity) about 3/4 of a mile (a 20 - 30 minute hike) into the woods from route I-93 and the Lafayette Campground. Pay phones and (pay) showers are located at the campground. Most people sleep in the cabin, which is comfortable, though crowded; some have tented or used a hammock. Be aware that there is VERY limited flat, open space. Please review the equipment list we have provided and use it to guide your packing. Remember, it is always difficult to predict White Mountain weather or Mother Nature. Be prepared for coolness, hotness, wetness, and bugginess!
WHAT ABOUT EMERGENCIES?
If a loved one needs to leave an emergency message, they can call (603) 862-2381 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and leave a message with Lisa Wilder. We will be checking in with her during Wilderness Week.
SHOULD I BRING ANYTHING SPECIAL?
About 30 Live, Learn, and Teachers and 8 full-time staff from a variety of different backgrounds will be coming together. There is a tremendous potential for learning from each other. With that in mind, we recommend that you share your talents with us! We provide all food. Due to cold storage limitations, we do not eat meat during the week (though we do have tofu, eggs, cheese, and milk - powdered only).
Please bring the following with you to Wilderness Week:
- A 'MYSTERY OBJECT'.. .to be strategically placed in the cabin as a puzzle to others; this object should have some special meaning for you. Please don't bury this in your pack, we will collect it when we first meet; don't worry, you will get it back .
- Readings ...a paragraph, poems, essays, inspiring statements, books, names of books, quotes, or visual art to share. Also, be sure to bring Dewey's Experience and Education with you.
- Music!. ..an instrument, your voice, or a good memory for tunes. Guitars are feasible (except the plug-in type).
- A little cash... Showers at the campground are about 25 cents for a few minutes of hot water, and you will spend one day in a local town so you might want a little spending money.
WHEN WILL WE RETURN?
We will return to UNH on Friday evening. It's always difficult to predict exactly what time we will arrive, but typically we reach the A lot parking area (across from the UNH Field House) between five and six p.m.
