Nuts & Bolts
LIVE, LEARN, AND TEACH SUMMER LEARNING SITE SELECTION
Site Selection for Summer Learning is something that involves all members of the LLT community. You are not "placed" in a site, but have considerable voice and choice in the site selection process. While we would like all Live, Learn, and Teach participants to receive their first choice for site and class assignment, this is not always possible. We ask that you be flexible during this process. The most important results of LLT are to expose you to a philosophy that encourages young people to become lifelong learners and to provide you with a framework for designing and implementing quality, experiential curricula, using your local community as a resource. This can be achieved with any age group in any discipline. Because we also promote interdisciplinary learning, there will be opportunities to share your expertise with summer learners even if the primary focus of a class is not in your discipline. Site selection is a collaborative process, and your voice will be an important part of placement decisions.
Please review each site description and reflect upon how each might work for you. Your site placement will be based upon three criteria: the need to provide teachers for all classes (grades 1-12); the number of summer learners signed up in each class, and your site/grade level preference.
As a community, we have the collective responsibility to take into consideration the needs of all of our members. This requires that you make your needs known while being willing to compromise for the benefit of the group. Your collaboration skills may be tested through this process. If you keep the site criteria in perspective and your mind open to possibilities, your experience will be a rich one.
Durham, NH
Oyster River Middle School
Our elementary school program is located at Oyster River Middle School, walking distance from the University and the downtown area. There are many interesting places to explore in and around Durham. Most Summer Learners at this site will be from the Oyster River School District (a mostly affluent, yet semi-rural cluster of communities), Newmarket (a small, mostly working-class, 'mill' town), or Dover (a medium sized city with residents from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds). We will offer 4 or 5 classes here for students in grades 1-5.
Berwick, ME
Noble Middle School
Our middle school program is located at Noble Middle School in Berwick, Maine, a rural mill town located about 30 minutes from UNH. NMS serves children from three small Maine communities. The site of this school is very rural, and there are numerous natural resources nearby including a stream, a pond, and a bog, as well as fields and forests. We will offer 4 or 5 classes for students in grades 6 through 8 at Noble Middle School.
Somersworth, NH
Somersworth High School
Our High School program is conducted at Somersworth High School. Summer learners will come primarily from Somersworth, a working class former mill town on the NH border with Maine, but may include students from surrounding localities. We typically offer summer school credit in English, History, and Biology. Most students at this site are attempting to gain remedial credit for failed courses. There will probably be 4 classes offered, with subjects and grade levels depending on the number of students needing them.
