This program will provide an opportunity to:

  • Earn 4 graduate credits from the University of New Hampshire
  • Meet with teachers and government educational officials in Belize
  • Travel to remote Mayan village schools
  • Visit schools and classrooms in a variety of settings
  • Explore ruins and reefs, cayes and caves
  • Experience the ethnic diversity of Belize, particularly Mayan and Garifuna cultures
  • Gain a deeper understanding of our Central American neighbors
  • Pre-Trip Workshops

Through active learning, large and small group work, and independent study, participants will learn the educational, geographical, historical, and cultural background of Belize. The workshops will stress cooperative learning and community building activities. Participants will design a project to integrate their personal interests and objectives with in-country activities.

    In-Country Experience

During February vacation, participants will spend 8 - 11 days in Belize. Most of the experience will be in the Toledo or Stann Creek Districts. Participants will do an investigation based on their personal interests and classroom sharing in the US. We will be offering two programs to try to accommodate varying school vacations.

    Post-Trip Workshops

Follow-up sessions will guide participants in assessing and evaluating their experience in terms of their pre-trip objectives, current position, and future goals. Completion of the course work will satisfy University requirements for 4 graduate credits.
