(FULL-TIME POSITION: TUESDAY TO SATURDAY SHIFT)

 

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, widely recognized as one of New York’s premier human services providers, is a 119-year-old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services--social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness--which significantly improve the lives of 20,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Our constituents include older adults, homeless and formerly homeless adults, children and families, recent immigrants, disabled persons, adult learners and thousands more. Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Chef, the Sous Chef will join our great team of experienced cooks and food service workers in providing good food to the many clients of Lenox Hill Neighborhood House – we serve more than 300,000 meals every year. The Sous Chef will help provide our clients with nutritious and delicious meals with a focus on increasing the healthfulness of the food.

A large portion of the Sous Chef’s duties are administrative. The Sous Chef’s primary responsibilities are to support the Executive Chef in the procurement and ordering of all food goods; understanding the immediate and future food service needs to ensure that all production needs are met; organization and maintenance of food service systems for receiving, storing and preparation; and preparation and serving of meals on Saturdays and Sundays for the members of our Innovative Senior Center which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the year. In addition to serving the Innovative Senior Center members, the Sous Chef may be asked to assist with cooking many kinds of meals, assisting with events and serving different clients including children in our Early Childhood Center or the clients at our Women’s Mental Health Shelter, when needed.

 

The Sous Chef’s other responsibilities are to assist the Executive Chef with training interns and volunteers; oversee accurate record-keeping of food production and temperature logs daily; and to ensure quality assurance; recipe compliance, consistency and production; safety

guidelines in the kitchen are followed at all times; compliance with all food handling procedures, including those of the Department of Health as well as those of Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and any other government agency; and that proper sanitation and cleaning schedules are followed. Additionally, the Sous Chef, when required, must oversee that transported meals are scheduled, prepared and packaged to ensure proper temperature during transport. Finally, the Sous Chef must demonstrate initiative in the office and kitchen and will be expected to maintain composure and work effectively under stressful conditions.

In addition to the above, the Sous Chef will perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Chef.

 

Healthy Foods and Wellness:

All applicants should also have an interest in healthy food and how to increase the quality of food provided by a non-profit organization to its clients. Under the direction of our Executive Chef, and as part of our Healthy Foods and Wellness Program, the Sous Chef will be part of the team working to improve the quality of all of the food we serve at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House. We are interested in increasing the quantity of vegetables we serve, improving how they taste, introducing new foods and incorporating local fruits and vegetables as well as locally sourced meats when possible. This spring, we also plan to open our new roof garden which will create opportunities to introduce our clients to growing vegetables.

 

Schedule and Salary:

The current schedule requires that the Sous Chef work a full-time 35 hour week from Tuesday to Saturday. Holiday work will also be required. This schedule will vary at times, and may be changed, to ensure the best coverage of food services functions. A competitive salary based on experience and a comprehensive benefits package will be offered.

 

Qualifications:

A High School diploma or GED is required. Culinary School, 4-5 years of food service experience including substantial experience ordering and overseeing inventory and experience performing other food-related administrative tasks are strongly preferred. A current certificate of Food Protection and Sanitation from the New York City Department of Health is required. All applicants will also be required to undergo a background check.
