Playstreets are streets where youth can play and socialize. They occur on local streets officially closed to traffic for specific hours on a weekly basis (e.g., Tuesdays from 10 am - 2 pm). Activities range from highly structured to informal depending on the community's needs and resources.
Playstreets combined with farmer's markets turns unused street space already under a closure permit into a safe and inviting place where kids can play outside and socialize with other children in the neighborhood.
The ideal candidate will be a current college student or recent graduate, with an interest in physical activity, early childhood health and special events planning. This is an amazing opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experience working on large scale community event. This position requires you to be a true people person with an outgoing personality, and ability to relate to children and adults from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
RESBONSIBILTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
• Coordinate and organize programming activities with local community organizations •Work with City agencies and non-profit organizations to facilitate planning • Plan, organize and conduct outreach activities for Playstreets communities • Prepare and conduct presentations to local community organizations,
churches, day cares and day camps, schools, and parent teacher
associations (PTA) to raise awareness of and promote interest in the Playstreets initiative • Coordinate and supervise interns assisting with the Playstreets • Anticipate and trouble shoot solutions for Playstreets challenges and issues that arise • Draft letters to the editor or op-editor of local publications and via social media
• Six months to 1 year of experience working with community outreach and program implementation • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and handle high stress situations • Possess an interest in making a difference with respect to physical activity in relation to children • Preferably college or graduate students with some early childhood background • Willingness to travel throughout NYC and to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions • Ability to work with diverse populations • Bilingual preferred; Spanish-speaking a plus • Flexible schedule, including weekends • Reliable and dependable
