High Tunnel Manager/Horticulturist, Powell Gardens. Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden (a bi-state Kansas-Missouri metropolitan area of 2 million people) is located 35 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City, MO on a rural 970 acre site. Powell Gardens, a privately funded, 501C(3) public garden is seeking a full-time High Tunnel manager horticulturist for its newly constructed 1 acre of high tunnel. The High Tunnel project is being developed as an earned income program with an educational component and is not open to the Gardens’ general visitor. The High Tunnel Horticulturist will develop and maintain a commercially and financially successful high tunnel program. They shall apply expertise in high tunnel growing (including disease and pest control), and harvesting of a commercial crop. The position is responsible for the program design, maintenance, growing, installation, and harvest. The position shall coordinate greenhouse production, and including ordering seed/plants and materials, propagation and grafting of seedlings. The Horticulturist is responsible for hiring and supervising of field laborers and interns. Candidate must be an ambassador for Powell Gardens and develop an educational program to promote high tunnel growing. We are looking for a creative individual with strong communication skills as well as experience in high tunnel and vegetable crop production. The successful candidate shall implement sustainable and organic gardening practices.
