Dear Prospective Disability Services Student:

Thank you for checking out our web site.

To qualify for services, a student must provide appropriate documentation of her/his disability. The guidelines are provided to assure that your documentation meets UNH standards. Please give a copy of the guidelines to your diagnostician (physician, or psychologist at school or in private practice, or other practitioner—audiologist, optometrist, chiropractor, etc.), to ensure that your documentation meets these standards.

Once you have chosen to attend UNH, or are registered for a Division of Continuing Education class, the documentation should be sent to Disability Services for Students at the address below. Then you can schedule an appointment with the Director or Learning Disability Specialist by calling Becky at (603) 862-2607 (Voice/TTY). We may meet in person or on the phone if that is more convenient for you. Please be aware that there may be a wait due to our commitment to currently enrolled students.

At our meeting, we will discuss the accommodations and services that you have received in the past and those recommended in your documentation. We will let you know at this time if your documentation meets the UNH standards under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. If additional information is required, we will discuss what is needed and how you might obtain that information. We will also discuss the accommodations and services that are available to you at UNH.

Please be aware that UNH does not offer a university-wide service or program for subject area tutorial, nor is tutorial with learning disability specialists available. Tutoring is considered a personal service and all students with or without disabilities are responsible for securing needed subject area tutorial on their own. We do, however, have a variety of support programs available to all students through the Center for Academic Resources (CFAR). CFAR offers individualized academic mentoring in learning strategies such as time management, test-taking, organization, and note-taking and reading skills; drop-in group tutoring and study groups for selected courses; computer support; course information; and referrals to other campus resources.

Additionally, the Center for Academic Resources administers a federal TRIO program, Student Support Services. Through this grant program, students with documented disabilities registered with Disability Services for Students may be eligible to receive free tutoring if they are matriculated in a four year degree program at UNH. Visit their website at   www.cfar.unh.edu or call Daniela Adler at (603) 862-3698 (Voice/TTY) for more information.

Finally, if you are a member of any UNH Varsity Athletic Team, you are eligible for free subject area tutorial services as required by the NCAA. To receive such support, contact Joanne Maldari, Coordinator of the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services at (603) 862-0283 (Direct Line).

We look forward to hearing from you and meeting you in the near future. Please keep in touch with any questions you or your physician or other practitioner might have about the guidelines.

Sincerely yours,

Disability Services for Students Staff
