Alternative Text

DSS will acquire alternative text formats for students requiring such. We will contact the publisher of the textbook to order alternative formats such as audio/ CD, PDF, Word, large print, and Braille. We also provide training for students to scan their own text pages and convert them to audio files to download on their Ipods. Scanned pages can also be read aloud with Read and Write Gold, and other read-aloud technology options. See the Assistive Technology videos to learn more about  Read and Write Gold. Students requesting texts in alternative format must be registered with DSS and eligible for this accommodation. Students who are not currently registered with DSS, as well as those who are registered but have not yet been approved for this accommodation must meet with a DSS staff member for eligibility.

Please be aware that alternative text requests can take 1 to 6 weeks to obtain. The sooner the student fills out the required forms and acquires the syllabus and textbook information from the professor, the more expedient the process will be to get the material to the student. Students are required to purchase the textbook and provide the receipt to the DSS office.

Students can be proactive and check the following FREE resources to obtain alternative text formats on their own without having to go through DSS:

  1. Bookshare.org http://www.bookshare.org/web/Welcome.html
  2. Talking Books, NH State Library http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/talking_books/
  3. Amazon.com   Audio, E-Books and Large Print
  4. Don't forget to check your local library and Dimond Library at UNH.
You will need the following information for each text: Title, Edition, Author, Publisher, Course Name and Profeesor, and ISBN #.
