Lisa

Lisa has recently learned to talk with others through facilitated communication. She has spoken to many UNH classes about her life and her new ability to communicate. Lisa lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Facilitated communication has changed my life. I can tell people what's important to me. I'm able to choose friends. I'm likable. People respect me and know I'm smart.

With facilitated communication, I'm able to make decisions by myself. Before facilitated communication, I used pictures, but it wasn't exact words I could use. It was frustrating because everyone tried to guess what I wanted. Usually, they were wrong.

My childhood was rough because I was in so many different programs. I really didn't fit it anywhere I went. I knew I was smart, but I couldn't tell anyone. I felt trapped inside my body and couldn't get out. You have to understand that there are so many other silent ones that are still trapped.

I have gone all over New England teaching people about facilitated communication. I really enjoy showing everyone how to get started.
I sometimes dream about going to California.
I want to live as independently as I can and be surrounded by good people. Friendships are very important to me.
People need to be a part of this change. Labeling only hurts the ones you love. You need to forget the labels. Everyone is smart and beautiful inside.
