November 7, 2011

CI-UNH will hold its first statewide Chinese Language Contest in early December. This contest is open to all 1st year and 2nd year Chinese language students from 4th grade to college. The contest includes two parts: a YCT test plus a short quiz on China history and culture. The contest will be held at each participating local school district in addition to our main test site at UNH in Durham. The contest will last approximately 60 minutes. Each site will determine the exact time for this contest. Test materials will be mailed to each site ahead of time. Each site is responsible for mailing back all test materials for scoring. CI-UNH will select 3 winners from each site. The top winner will receive $100 plus a CI T-shirt. Two second winners will receive one T-Shirt each in addition to a certification.

There are three internationally recognized Chinese language aptitude tests: HSK, YCT and BCT (for business). If we compare HSK to SAT, then YCT is similar to PSAT. Preparation for YCT will help you get a better score on future HSK, which most Chinese universities and companies require if you are going there to study or work there.

Interested schools should write to yige@comcast.net for further information. Please specify your school name, approximate number of participants plus your contacting information.  Please note that students can choose to take the test at their local sites or come to Murkland G14 at UNH on December 2. The test will begin at 3:30 on that day.

Winners will be announced together with awards on January 26th at our Chinese New Year Gala in Johnson Theatre at UNH.
