Honors Policy

Honors Program

Civil Engineering majors may pursue  an Honors-in-Major designation which shows  up on the diplomas and academic records of successful graduates in addition to a Greek honors designation  if earned. For example, a successful graduate’s diploma might have the following on it:

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
University Honors in Civil Engineering
Magna Cum Laude

Honors Courses

Honors courses are regular civil or environmental engineering courses designated by an “H” (i.e. CIE 622H) and which involve additional work assignments. Appropriate additional work includes, but is not restricted to, more in-depth laboratory assignments; additional laboratory or course assignments; research, analysis, or design projects; literature reviews; term papers; presented lectures; and research proposals.  To designate a course as an honors course, the student must first meet with the professor of the course and come to an agreement about what work will be required. The student then obtains, fills out, and submits an “Honors Designation Form” (obtainable from the Honors Program Office and the University Registrar) to the Registrar before the 3rd Friday of the semester the course is taken.

Enrollment

Students wishing to enter the Honors In-Major program must meet with the Department Honors Coordinator prior to or during the first week of classes in their junior year. The program is explained in person and the student is given these written requirements. If the student decides to take advantage of the opportunity, they adjust their curriculum as needed.

Compliance

The Department reviews the transcripts of HIM students each  January and June and warns students who fail to meet GPA requirements that they should petition to stay in the program or they will be asked to withdraw from the program. Cases are then decided on a case-by-case basis  by  the Department faculty. Students allowed to proceed in the HIM program, continue to be subject to the semester-end review in subsequent semesters. The University Honors Program is informed each semester of all such actions and results.

Honors in Civil Engineering

To achieve the Civil Engineering, Honors-in-Major, students are required to fulfill the following requirements:

  • An overall, cumulative GPA of 3.20 or greater achieved by the beginning of the junior year and maintained each semester throughout the junior and senior years.
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater in CIE and ENE courses achieved by the beginning of the junior year and maintained each semester throughout the junior and senior years.
  • A minimum of 16 credits achieved in honors courses (one of which must be CIE 795H).
  • A minimum of two CIE or ENE 600-level courses taken as honors courses (3 or 4 credits each).*
  • An honors thesis developed in the course CIE 799H, Independent Study, for 4 credits during the senior year.
  • A minimum of one  additional  CIE or ENE 700-level course taken as an honors course (3 or 4 credits).*
  • A minimum grade of B- is required for all courses used to achieve the Honors-in-Major designation.

*Taking a 3 credit course for honors will result in a minimum of five courses taken as honors courses in order to achieve the total of 16 credits required.

The Senior Thesis
CIE 799H is to consist of a senior thesis project guided by a faculty advisor and resulting in a written thesis.  The student should meet with potential faculty advisors in advance and work out what will be required with the professor willing to serve. The thesis is to be presented to a group of at least three faculty members in the spring semester of the senior year. All faculty members attending the thesis presentation are to have input as to the course grade which is assigned by the faculty advisor.

Honors in Environmental Engineering

  • Students are required to maintain an overall 3.20 grade-point average and a 3.30 grade-point average in major coursework.
  • Students must successfully complete 12 credits of honors coursework in at least two courses (600 level) and one senior or graduate course (700/900 level) offered by the Environmental Engineering Program. Honors courses will involve increased work assignments, i.e., laboratory experiments/analysis, research, design projects, literature review, term papers, lectures of comprehensive examination. Students registering for honors designated coursework must follow the University Honors Program Course Designation Guidelines
  • Students must successfully complete 799H Senior Honors thesis (4 cr. total during senior year; 3 credits of which may be used to fulfill an ENE non-design elective). An individual project must be completed under faculty guidance resulting in a written thesis which is to be submitted by the end of the second semester of senior year.
