Network Registration |
If you have any questions not addressed below, feel free to write to netreg.info@unh.edu.
What information is collected during the registration process?
The only information collected during the registration process is your username (also known as your IT ID, AD username,
or your CISUNIX username) and your computer's unique hardware address (also known as a 'MAC' address). You must
submit your password along with your username to confirm your secure registration, however that password is never
stored during the registration process. These two equally-important pieces of information will be used to contact
you in the event your computer becomes infected or a risk to the integrity of the UNH network.
[top]
Your username (IT ID) is a unique username issued by CIS. This username may
also be your AD or CISUNIX account username. If you do not know your username, you may find it online.
[top]
Is registration required for all faculty/staff?
Yes. As of 2005, registration for all faculty and staff computers is required. To register your computer, please visit
https://register.unh.edu.
[top]
What about visitors to UNH accessing the network - do they register as well?
Yes. A visitor registration page is available for all UNH visitors seeking UNH network access at
https://register.unh.edu/guest.html.
Registration is required in order to access any on-campus network resources.
[top]
Can I register from another computer on-campus?
No. In order to maintain up-to-date contact information for all faculty, staff and visitors accessing the UNH
Network, registrations must be completed from your own computer. Otherwise, your UNH IT ID will be associated
with a MAC address other than your own.
[top]
I am unable to register - what can I do now?
If you are unable to register your computer using your UNH IT ID, AD, or CISUNIX credentials, you may register
temporarily using the visitor registration page. These temporary registrations are valid for one week. CIS staff
are available Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 5:00pm to assist in locating your UNH IT ID and resetting passwords as
necessary.
Registering your computer using your UNH IT ID and password is the fastest and most secure method of registration.
[top]
I've heard CIS scans computers that register - is that true?
No. CIS collects only your UNH IT ID and unique hardware (MAC) address. The only information not provided by you
at the time of registration is your hardware address.
[top]
I have an Apple computer - will I be able to register?
Yes. NetReg supports both MAC and PC computer configurations.
[top]
I use my office computer at home as well as on-campus - do I still need to register?
Yes. If you connect your computer on-campus, simply complete the registration process and when you return to your
office, your connection will continue uninterrupted.
[top]
Do I have to register my computer each time I am online?
The registration process collects the unique hardware address of your network interface card (NIC). Once a NIC is
registered with CIS, further registrations are not necessary. If you have a new NIC (i.e. a new computer) or an
alternate computer that has not been previously registered, you will need to register that computer.
Registrations are purged annually, therefore all campus computers need to be re-registered annually. Visitor registrations expire after one week of connectivity. Any UNH visitors without an IT ID or sponsored account requiring UNH network access will need to re-register weekly. [top]
I am a guest and need UNH network access for longer than a week - what do I do?
To avoid registering weekly, please apply for a sponsored account. Application forms and more information is
available at usnhaccounts.unh.edu.
[top]
I connect via wireless and wired connections - how do I register?
The registration process gathers your unique hardware (MAC) address from your network interface card (NIC). A
separate NIC is required when connecting to wireless and wired networks. Each separate NIC that access any part
of the UNH network will need to register. Once a NIC has been registered once, the process is complete and
further connections to the network will not require another registration.
Laptop docking stations may also require multiple registrations - if you connect via a docked laptop, you may be required to re-register if you connect outside the dock. [top]
I am a department ATL - how can I register multiple computers?
Department ATLs and Computer Cluster Administrators can register 25 computers or more using their username, and
will also need to gather the specific hardware (MAC) address for each cluster computer. The username and hardware
address information may be sent to netreg.info@unh.edu as a text file with
the following three (3) columns:
Column 1 may contain either the PTC username or the username of the computers primary user/owner. (The decision to use the PTC username or user's username in column 2 is at the discretion of the PTC for convenience, however the user/owner username is recommended when available.) Column 2 containing the PTC username (Primary Technical Contact IT ID) Column 3 should contain the individual hardware addresses, separated by colons and with all letters capitalized (i.e. 00:11:22:AA:BB:CC). [top]
How are cluster computers or computers with multiple owners registered?
Multiple computer registrations apply to cluster computers and computers with multiple owners. When registering
multiple-owner computers, the primary technical contact for the computer should register using their username and
password.
NetReg provides CIS with contact information of owners of infected or otherwise compromised computers that impact other campus clients. Computers belonging to a computer cluster should be registered to a status UNH employee for contact purposes. For computers with multiple owners, a status UNH employee will need to register the computer with their UNH username and password. You may lookup your UNH username online. [top]
How do I register my network printer?
Most network printers connect to the UNH network via a static (unchanging) IP address. Printers
connected via a static IP address are already pre-registered. Printers configured for DHCP
(dynamic rather than static) need to be reconfigured with a static address. Once a printer
has a static IP address, it is registered on the network. To request a static IP address,
please go to https://networking.unh.edu/ipreq.
If you are not sure how your printer is configured, print a configuration page from the printer (instructions are provided in all printer manuals; if the manual is not handy, most vendors also provide instructions on how to print this information at their websites). If you require assistance either determining your current printer configuration or need help configuring your printer with a static IP address, please go to https://remedy.unh.edu/questions to submit a question/request and CIS will contact you. [top]
I'm receiving an error message saying no lease found - what do I do?
The "No lease found. Your computer must be connected to a network connection." error message will appear if your computer
is disconnected from the network (cable unplugged) or you have a VPN connections established. If you are connected through a VPN,
disconnect the connection and close the VPN client.
If you connect to the UNH Network via a static (unchanging) IP address, you will see this error if you attempt to register your computer. Static IP addresses do not require registration. If you are still unable to register and were previously connected to the VPN, please restart your computer and attempt to re-register. The VPN connection may remain for a few seconds after it is disconnected, preventing a successful registration. [top]
I have a static IP address - do I have to register?
No. Static IP addresses do not change and the identity of the computer connecting via that static IP
address is already identified on the UNH Network.
[top]
I need to update my registration information - who do I contact?
To update your registration information, please e-mail netreg.info@unh.edu or
contact the CIS Help Desk & Dispatch Center at 862-4242.
[top]
If I registered my laptop in my residence hall, do I need to register it again in non-residential building?
Yes. You need to do it once for wired connections, and once for wireless connections.
To register, start your browser and go to https://register.unh.edu.
(This URL for the non-residential buildings is different from the URL used in the residence halls.)
[top]
I am a commuter student. Do I need to register my computer to connect online while on campus?
Yes, start your browser while your machine is connected on the campus, and go to
https://register.unh.edu.
[top]
Do I need to register my computer to access UNH resources while connected from off-campus?
No. Only computers connecting on-campus must register.
[top]
How can I determine if I have a static or DHCP network printer?
For information on determining the connection type of your printer, please visit
http://www.unh.edu/cisnow/staticprint.html.
