Bandwidth Management Policy Update

Amid several recent complaints about Internet service, UNH Telecommunications adjusted the student network bandwidth management configuration at 10:15am, Thu, Nov 7. Apparently http-based peer-to-peer file-sharing has caught on.

Outbound http traffic began spiking intermittently on 10/22 and then on 11/4 hit the ceiling and stayed there. Old policy did not restrict http at all, only Entertainment.

New policy:
Total outbound 50M

  • Outbound entertainment class 5M max
  • Outbound http 10M max
  • All other classes share leftovers

Total inbound 50M

  • Inbound entertainment class 5M max
  • Inbound http 20M max.
  • All other classes share leftovers

Entertainment Class definition:

  • Direct Connect
  • eDonkey
  • Gnutella
  • Hotline
  • KaZaa
  • 'Napster'
  • Blubster
  • Aimster
