Friday, 8/30/02, from 7:00AM to 8:00AM - pubpages/Turing server will be down
The pubpages web service will be moved to a new hardware platform on Friday, August 30 between 7 and 8am. This will require an estimated 10-15 minutes of unavailability. In addition, Turing will be rebooted to install a new OS kernel, again between 7am and 8am. This should require less than 10 minutes of unavailability. Hypatia and Alberti will remain available during this time.

paradox.unh.edu will be down for system maintenance. Paradox hosts all @lists.unh.edu mailing lists, and the alias request/lookup web pages at http://aliases.unh.edu/. Note that mail aliases will continue to function, and all mail destined for mailing lists will queue up, and be delivered once the system is back online.

UPDATE: August 19, 2002 2:53 pm - NetBIOS Services from Off Campus
Security measures taken to protect campus systems from problems originating on the Internet have not been causing as many difficulties as had been anticipated. Exchange services and most authentication services appear to not be effected by measures taken. However, please note Windows File Sharing continues to be limited to those clients who access UNH resources from off-campus by first logging into VPN.

If you do not use VPN to access UNH resources from off-campus, please go to http://www.unh.edu/computer-security/vpn.html for directions on how to install and use VPN. To use VPN, you must also have a UNH AD account. For further assistance, please contact the CIS Help Desk and Dispatch center at 862-4242.

UPDATE: August 16, 2002 3:15pm - August 16, 2002 - Netbios services (Windows File Sharing, Authentication, and Exchange) have been blocked
UNH has been experiencing problems caused by events that are originating on the Internet for the past two days. For security reasons, access to Microsoft Windows type file sharing, printing, and Outlook Exchange services from off-campus must be limited to those clients who access UNH resources from off-campus by first logging into VPN. Access to UNH resources through web browsers from off-campus, such as access to the Exchange server through a web browser, should work without using VPN. Access to UNH resources from on-campus is not affected by this situation. If you do not use VPN to access UNH resources from off-campus, please go to www.unh.edu/computer-security/vpn.html for directions on how to install and use VPN. To use VPN, you must also have a UNH AD account. For further assistance, please contact the CIS Help Desk and Dispatch center at 862-4242. If you call the center after customary work hours, please leave a message with your contact information, and we will return your call Monday morning. Thank you for your cooperation in making UNH a safe computing environment.

August 8 , 2002 - Outage affecting several segments of the UNH campus network
We experienced an outage affecting several segments of the UNH campus network this morning. The outage lasted from approximately 5:30am to 9:20am EDT. Engineers were on site before 6:00am working to fix the problem. The problem turned out to be two apparently unrelated failures on one of our core routers. Remediation included replacement of a failed fiber optic interface, and a configuration workaround to a bug in the route distribution protocol software. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for all cooperation.
