Apple provides the Energy Saver Control Panel with all currently shipping Macintosh computers. This Control Panel allows the computer user to adjust various levels of the energy saving features built into the Macintosh.
To access this control panel, go to the Apple Menu in the upper left hand part of the screen. Scoll down to Control Panels, highlight the Energy Saver Control Panel with the mouse and release the mouse button.
By moving the slider bar, you can specify how long your computer will wait before it puts itself into "Sleep Mode". If you do not wish to put your computer to sleep, but want your monitor to be turned off to save your screen AND save electricity, click the "Show Details" button. If you need to leave programs running then set the Energy Saver Control Panel to just put your display to sleep.
You may wish to set the time for the display to sleep somewhere around fifteen to twenty minutes to start with. You can always adjust the settings later if you need to.
