Turning on energy management for Windows NT Workstation

These instructions guide you in setting BIOS level power management on a Dell computer, with BIOS version A03. If you do not find the options and commands described below in your BIOS screens, please exit the setup screen without saving any changes, and contact us at the e-mail address shown below. Please note that this implementation of energy saving causes both the monitor and the internal hard disk to power down after a period of inactivity. Dell Computer Corporation has reported some problems with computer programs crashing due to power management. We have so far not been able to reproduce these problems during our testing here at UNH.

  1. Start or restart your computer.
  2. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility (see below).
  3. Press Alt-P to switch to page two of the setup screen.
  4. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the Power Management field.
  5. Select the "Regular" option, by pressing the right arrow key.
  6. Press Esc to save and exit.

To enter the BIOS Setup Utility, either reboot your computer and press F2 when prompted to do so during the system boot process, or press ctrl-alt-enter.
