UNH President Mark Huddleston

From the President

Dear Colleagues [on the Internationalization Panel],

I have read the Report of the President’s Panel on Internationalizing UNH and met with Professor Howard and Vice Provost MacFarlane to discuss your recommendations. I am impressed and grateful to you all for the obvious hard work, thoughtful deliberation, and solid research that went into your vision for UNH’s international future.

The Faculty Senate has also read the report, and I know will forward to me their thoughts on the recommendations. I look forward to receiving those. But my first reactions are to agree with, and appreciate the need for, much of what you have written.

I am especially pleased that two of your three primary recommendations—that UNH move forward on both a web-based data management system and emergency management insurance—have RFP’s underway. These are long overdue and critical for the expansion of our activities and the safety of our overseas colleagues and students. I also agree with the need for changes in our current administrative structure, and particularly for senior leadership for our international endeavors. Moreover, I appreciate the recognition of how this might be funded in a time of severe budget constraint.

Other recommendations, as you suggest, follow naturally from these three: increased opportunities for students, faculty and staff; international perspectives woven into the curriculum; cluster hires around particular areas of the world; more funding for under-represented and low-income students; better integration of the University’s tripartite mission; and a host of other important strategies that together create a genuinely global university.

In the weeks ahead, I look forward to hearing from the Faculty Senate, to learning of your progress with the RFP’s, and to considering a timetable for structural change. I’m sure we will talk more. But for now, please know you have my thanks for your very good work.

Best wishes,

Mark W. Huddleston
President
